Our clients, services, and environment

Our environment

We have a unique pension system in the Netherlands – it's one of the best in the world. We ensure that all our fund participants receive what they’re entitled to when they retire. We are there for all those professionals who are so vital to our society: teachers, cleaners, construction workers, and police officers. People who work for us day in and day out. We are there to safeguard their pensions and want our current and future generations of participants to be able to enjoy a good, collective pension in a livable world. Together with them, we are building toward a sustainable future.

Our clients

As the Netherlands’ biggest pension provider, APG works for eight pension funds. On behalf of these funds, we look after the pensions of 4.7 million participants. APG provides executive consultancy, asset management, pension administration, pension communications, and employer services. We work for pension funds and employers in education, government, construction, cleaning, housing corporations, sheltered employment, medical specialists, and architect agencies. APG manages over 616 billion euro in pension assets (source: APG annual report 2024).

The context within which we do our work at APG is changing.

In the coming years, the pension funds that APG works for will make a transition to the renewed pension system. Two funds have already made the switch, while the remaining six are scheduled to follow on January 1, 2026, and January 1, 2027.
The old system focused on building up to a predetermined pension amount. In the renewed system, the contribution is fixed, and the final amount depends on the performance of the funds. This means that increases or decreases in pensions are part of the new system, and the pension capital that participants see may fluctuate.
The pension payments that retired participants receive may also slightly rise or fall on an annual basis. These changes in the system introduce a degree of uncertainty.

Still, we want to ensure that the participants in our funds can enjoy their retirement years without financial worries. In addition to careful administrate and invest, we must support them in making informed financial decisions at various moments in their lives. But there’s more. Pensions are becoming more transparent. Funds and participants now have a much clearer view of what they will receive—and also where their money is being invested.
Our funds and participants are increasingly asking: what are you doing with our pension money? Does it contribute to problems like climate change, or to the solution?
When it comes to sustainable investing, we’ve made giant steps. We are a global leader in this area, and we intend to remain so. With the vast amount of capital we manage for our funds, we can truly make a difference—by investing in sustainable companies and by driving change where progress on sustainability is still too slow.

It also requires us to answer the question: ‘How sustainable are we ourselves, really?’. We aim to be climate neutral by 2030, and through our internal program ‘APG Makes a Difference’, we support social initiatives. Over the past few years, we’ve taken many steps to make our operations more sustainable.
Our Edge West building is fully climate neutral, and in 2025, we will switch to a new sustainable climate system for our Heerlen office, reducing gas consumption by 85 percent. But it’s also about things like waste, food, mobility, and diversity & inclusion.
